When many of us visit our OB-GYN we essentially hand over control to our doctor. It doesn't have to be this way! Now more than ever, we are realizing the important role that we have to play in managing our own health. Your doctors can still be a part of this, but truly taking ownership of your own healing is essential to thriving. That’s why I’ve brought in an amazing doctor to talk about how to build the right patient-doctor relationships.

Today, I have Dr. Felice Gersh with me. She is a double Board-Certified OB/GYN and integrative medicine practitioner and the founder and director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, California. Dr. Gersh really is remarkable having been awarded Orange County Medical Association’s ‘Physician of the Year’ Award for the last 13 years consecutively, and Southern California’s ‘SuperDoctor’ Award for the last several years.
We cover a lot of important topics in this conversation, including creating the ideal relationship with your gynecologist that places you at the center of your healing process. This involves knowing the right questions to ask and which labs and scans will be the most useful in the end.
We also discuss how many of the procedures we undergo and the medicines we take to prevent disease can actually make us sicker. They can cause unneeded stress and inflammation that can lead to just the very complications that we were trying to avoid in the first place. This is why it’s so crucial that both you and your doctor have the best information available.
How would you define your relationship with your OB-GYN? Tell me how it’s going in the comments!

Quotes
“I am only there in the room with my patients for such a tiny blip of their life, so what I have to do is to spark the fire to get them to really make healthy choices all the times when I’m not there with them.” [4:48]
“We cast a broad net to look at what the total status of the body is. Then based on what we find, we can hone in on what really needs more attention.” [20:26]
“We now know that your emotions have such an impact on your health. So I keep wondering if we’re promoting breast cancer by creating a chronic stress state in women who have mammographies where we keep having them come back repeated views.” [42:55]
“The bottom line is every woman really needs informed consent and to decide for herself if she would feel more comfortable having the mammogram or actually more comfortable not.” [46:08]
