BURN 700 EXTRA CALORIES PER DAY SUBCONSCIOUSLY
Do you want to know how I was able to BURN 695 calories while completing 5 hours of work on the computer??
Another blog, brought to you with $700 + in savings should you decide to follow my lead and save yourself tireless hours of research. I wish I had this info when I was doing my homework! Someone could have enticed me with:
- SAVE $2500 IN TIME SAVED BY SETTING IT UP THIS WAY
- PLUS $700 + IN MONEY SAVED BY SHOPPING THE LOWEST PRICED EQUIPMENT
The jury is out! Studies have revealed something more disastrous to our health than any epidemic ever to sweep humanity. It’s what we do with these statistics that will direct the future of our health. There’s a fork in the road – 1 toward greater sickness and the other toward evolving health. Which will YOU take given THESE STATISTICS?:
- Those who sit for long periods of time are twice as likely to have diabetes or heart disease, 2 of our nation’s greatest killers.
- For every 1 hour you spend sitting down, approximately 22 minutes of your life expectancy is decreased! (compared to the damage from 1 cigarette which is only 11 minutes).
SITTING IS WORSE THAN SMOKING! Is there a Sitting General to warn us of that?
Like most people, the vast majority of my work is done virtually and by week’s end I have easily logged 40 – 60 hours of time spent sitting in front of the computer. After hearing these remarkable statistics I decided I had to find a way to limit the amount of time I invested into sitting down without giving up my computer, which is an absolute necessity in my business. So I did heavy amounts of research and purchased an entirely new office set-up. I experimented with my new ‘desk’ recently, a retrofitted surface to support my computer atop a treadmill base. The walking treadmill matched with the desk is engineered to run long periods of time at slow speeds. From here I am able to perform all the necessary computer functions I would do normally, such as typing, reading & YouTubing (of course). The pace was maintained at a moderate 1.5mph but increasing to 2mph would still allow me to do everything I needed to do without interference or a distractingly wobbly monitor. Check out my video with me demonstrating the desk in action, as you can see it does not take up much more space than a standard size treadmill.
I kept a tally of all hours worked/walked and at day’s end I logged 5 uninterrupted hours which totaled 7.26 miles, 2332 steps and 695 calories.
As a result I burned 150 more calories PER hour than if I had remained sedentary. Our body naturally burns 70 calories per hour even at rest just to fulfill mandatory bodily functions like digestion, muscle movement and even formulating thought. When my work day was complete I had already burned 695 extra calories so there was no need to invest time commuting to the gym and working out to burn off those same calories. BONUS: If you’re interested in losing weight, walking is one of the best fat burning exercises you can do, you actually burn more fat with walking as opposed to running because running uses glycogen and muscle stores to fuel movement.
Our society is very forward thinking….. literally! Most actions we habitually perform have us crunching forward; being on the computer, driving the car, watching TV, etc. This forward bending motion causes the shoulders to constrict inward, that motion tightens the chest and less blood goes into the heart and lungs. Because of this we see more breathing restrictions, asthma, allergies, heart disease and even heart attacks because less blood flow is getting to those areas. Sitting in a chair shuts down the activity in the legs and causes the body to burn calories less efficiently than it was designed.
People bend forward an average of 3,500 per day but only bend backwards 5 times!
Approximately 80% of the population suffers with back pain some time in their life.
At any given time nearly one-third of us are experiencing some form of back pain!
And listen up employers…Back pain is one of the leading 3 causes for DISABILITY!
Expansive studies that near a million people over 5 years, showed that:
Sitting for more than 6 hours a day takes a stressful toll on your body equivalent to smoking 17 cigarettes!
BUT I EXERCISE DAILY…Why That isn’t Enough!
“I'm sure this isn't news to you; most people are aware that physical activity is essential to good health. But what you may not know is that too much sitting time is harmful even if you're getting enough exercise.
This means you could be meeting the recommended guidelines for exercise (i.e., 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, five days a week), but still be at higher risk of disease if you sit for long periods each day. In fact, a large study involving over 100,000 U.S. adults found that those who sat for more than six hours a day had up to a 40 percent greater risk of death over the next 15 years than those who sat for less than three hours a day. Most importantly, this effect occurred regardless of whether the participants exercised.” SOURCE: Chris Kresser, Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-kresser/sitting-health_b_2897289.html
It’s time to start getting erect and promoting openness through the chest and shoulders, this new form of exercise will start changing that statistic for the better.
I tested out walking barefoot and would not recommend this as the tread on the treadmill can rub on the soles of the feet. Socks did not feel very supportive either so I wore a lightweight pair of shoes, running shoes would also get the job done. I did get warm and sweat very minimally so comfortable clothing is important but it does not have to be workout specific gear.
Part of the set-up includes a kneeling chair that can be used when a break is needed. Whenever my feet would get sore from walking I would spend time kneeling. The desk, among others, was THE best priced, and cranks from a UBER low height to a SUPER high height (higher than every other desk I researched) so everything can be adjusted ergonomically. I spent days of research putting together all of the moving parts of this set-up and I'd be happy to help anyone who's looking to put this together and interested in saving both time and money. There are other components as well and every piece has been specifically selected to provide a comprehensive ergonomic work setting. The keyboard is hand shaped to prevent arthritis, there is padding for the wrist when typing and my second screen mount is always kept at eye level.
If you’re interested in getting yourself a similar set-up, and you’d like us to email you the spreadsheet with links on all of the items we purchased, contact me with your email address below and we’ll send you the details!
