An excess of estrogen, coupled with a deficiency of progesterone (the counter hormone to estrogen), is the common denominator for a lot of female troubles.
Let’s go back…WAY back.
You walked into a doctors office begging for help.
Your period showed up, it hurt like hell, you had to call in sick to school for the first 2 days of your cycle, you had horrible acne, cried to Taylor Swift songs, and felt uber depressed because <<INSERT LAME BOYS NAME HERE>> called you FAT.
Okay maybe that was me. Did anyone else live this nightmare at 15?
My doctor ‘rescued me’ by prescribing me birth control pills to help regulate the frequency and severity of my periods.
I went nuts on those pills. I gained weight, felt like crap, was tired all the time, and had more gas than a Shell station.
HINDSIGHT SOLUTION: Balancing Hormones Naturally! (More on this later)
This is CRUCIAL to understand because your doctor will most likely suggest either hormone replacement therapy (FAKE hormones that inspire BIG TIME digestive problems such as IBS, which can lead to auto immune disease) OR the pill, simply because there isn’t much else he has on offer. I was a guest on PhatManRadio discussing this topic that you can LISTEN TO HERE.
Summary: The pill doesn’t offer any kind of a long term solution, but rather a HUGE band aid.
# 1 – ARE YOU ESTROGEN DOMINANT?
Though we think of declining estrogen as the hallmark of menopause, it's actually common for women to experience surges of abnormally high estrogen levels during the menopausal and premenopausal periods, as well as earlier in life. I’m seeing many women in their 20’s and 30’s showing early signs of pre menopause = NOT COOL!
Estrogen Dominance affects more Americans than ever in our history and it’s evident when I test the majority of my clients. And for those I hear casually opening up about their health complaints, it’s a daily thing for me to hear the following:
- Painful, heavy, clotty and/or long periods (this used to be me)
- Facial hair – especially above the lip
- Pre-menstrual tension including emotional upset, frustration, anger, headaches, breast distention, nose bleeds, sinus issues, bowel irregularities that occur from ovulation (up to 2 weeks prior to the period arriving)
- Mood swings – anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue
- Ovarian cysts
- Weight gain OR inability to lose weight
- Menopause (Yes, estrogen drops around 50, but is it too high compared to progesterone – these 2 must coexist in the perfect balance):
- Breast Cancer
- Hair loss
Estrogen dominance causes the liver to produce high levels of a protein called “thyroid binding globulin”, which, as its name suggests, binds the thyroid hormone and decreases the amount of thyroid hormone that can be assimilated into and utilized by the cells.
What does this lead to? Low thyroid function and all of the negative side effects that come along with it…such as HAIR LOSS!
#2 – WHAT CAUSES ESTROGEN DOMINANCE?
Besides what I mentioned in the first 5 minutes of this video and the natural hormonal fluctuations of menopause, certain lifestyle choices and conditions can also contribute to estrogen dominance syndrome, especially a low-fiber diet, overloading the liver with internal toxins, and absorbing toxins from the environment.
1) Low-fiber diet
A low-fiber diet causes estrogen levels to be higher, while a diet high in fiber results in decreased estrogen levels in the bloodstream. Why? Excess estrogen is excreted in the bowel. When stool remains in the bowel for a longer time, as in constipation, the estrogen is reabsorbed. Studies have shown that women on a high-fiber diet have lower levels of circulating estrogen. Lower levels of estrogen mean less estrogen stimulation of breast tissue, for example, which reduces the risk of breast cancer.
2) Overloading the liver
DID YOU KNOW? The liver performs over 500 different functions!
It detoxifies our body, protecting us from the harmful effects of chemicals, elements in food, environmental toxins, and even natural products of our metabolism, including excess estrogen. Anything that impairs liver function or ties up the detoxifying function will result in excess estrogen levels. When it is not broken down adequately, higher levels of estrogen build up. This is true for both men and women, although the effects are more easily recognized in men, as I discussed – MAN BOOBS and excess fat around the abdomen…Show me a man with a beer belly and I’ll show you a man with estrogen dominance.
I run urine analysis to test for liver function in my clients to explore cancer, auto-immunity and hormone congestion, as well as bacterial overgrowth, which is a PRIMARY cause for UTI's and bladder infections. I have a LOOOONG history of UTI's and GUESS WHAT? I found a TON of congestion in my liver, digestive track topped with adrenal fatigue. READ MORE about the importance of liver health HERE.
3) MINIMIZE ALCOHOL INTAKE! Estrogen dominance is more likely in those that indulge more than those who ‘pass’ on a Saturday night, as I am writing this blog.
In one study, blood and urine estrogen levels climbed 32% in women who drank just two drinks a day.
Consequently, breast cancer risks are higher for women drinkers. Not surprisingly, osteoporosis rates are lower.
#3 – HOW DO I FLUSH EXCESS ESTROGEN?
When I work with clients, who are beyond feeling ok except for a few minor complaints, we explore their hormone levels using a saliva test to explore their hormone levels and where they’re imbalanced. Upon having these vital pieces to the puzzle, I am then able to further recommend and customize their healing protocol, which consists of recommendations, that vary with each individual:
- DIET – Avoid eating processed soy, non organic produce, drinking from plastic containers, microwaving foods, storing foods in plastic containers, and eating conventional meats that are full of hormones, used to beef up animals to 4 times their size in less than half the time. Same goes for dairy products. If you’re going to eat, make it as organic as possible.
- REST – Get to bed at 10pm and get 7-9 hours of sleep. Simple as that!
- EXERCISE – Get moving more! Excess body fat results in conservation of estrogen. This may be why overweight women are at lower risk for osteoporosis; conversely, they are at higher risk of breast and uterine cancer.
Every woman has different needs for exercise however, some need more high intensity training, some do better with resistance training with weights, depending on the health of their adrenals. Research shows that physical activity curtails overproduction of estrogen. However, if taken too far, exercise can abolish periods altogether, resulting in the dangerous condition of Female Athletic Triad. As Goldilocks would say: Exercise efforts should be JUUUUST RIGHT!
- STRESS MANAGEMENT – Do you Yoga? A daily meditation practice, no matter how short or where it’s done is crucial to keep the release of Cortisol down. Cortisol is a ‘fat storing’ and ‘gut inflaming’ hormone when released in excess, as is the case if you’re ALWAYS in the fight or flight state.

- SUPPLEMENT daily with bio identical hormones such as natural progesterone to balance the excess estrogen. I CAUTION YOU HIGHLY to not take any birth control pills or anti depressants, as indicated above as those are merely band aids with poisons underneath them.
Oh, oh, oh. I almost forgot to tell you about another amazing way I flushed my liver as well as a great deal of my excess is hormones is via COFFEE ENEMAS. I negotiated a special Wellness Warrior price. To read more on how they work, why I do them 2-3 times per week, and how to buy, CLICK HERE. Free shipping for a limited time.
#4 – THE STAR OF THIS VIDEO:
DIMPRO – which helps to deactivate toxic substances and excess hormones, encouraging their elimination from the body. I talked about it all over the place in this video, so I don’t need to repeat myself. Let’s just say a lot of women use this only to clear up acne. I’m reluctant to make such claims without seeing the big picture, but it won’t hurt to try!

The runner up:
MAGNESIUM – Another key supplement in balancing hormones. Magnesium is a mineral, crucial in the process of producing progesterone and is necessary for more than 350 different biochemical process that occur within your body. THIS IS THE ONE I USE & RECOMMEND IN OUR PRACTICE.
# 5 – TAKE AWAY:
Limiting environmental exposure to xenoestrogens along with implementing a proper diet, rest, exercise, supplements and stress management can help reverse the syndrome of estrogen dominance.
Oh, and Remember what your parents told you when someone offered you drugs.
Since birth control is a drug.
JUST SAY NO!
Especially if you ever want to get pregnant and have a healthy baby.
But that’s a whole ‘nother topic I’ll save for another day.
